The Beaver Colony is the first and youngest section of the Scout Group. Beaver Scouts are young people aged between 6 and 8 years. There is flexibility in the age range, young people can join from age 5¾, and can move on to Cubs between the age of 7½ and 8½. It may sometimes be appropriate to extend this flexibility for young people with additional needs.
The Cub Pack is the second section of the Scout Group following on from Beavers. Cub Scouts are young people aged between 8 and 10½ years. There is flexibility in the age range, young people can join from age 7½ and can move on to Scouts between age of 10 and 11. It may sometimes be appropriate to extend this flexibility for young people with additional needs.
The Scout Troop is the third section in the Scout Group, above Beavers and Cubs. The Scout Section is for young people aged between 10½ and 14 years. There is flexibility in the age range, young people can join from the age of 10, and can move to Explorers between the age of 13½ and 14½. It may sometimes be appropriate to extend this flexibility for young people with additional needs.
Explorer Units are the fourth Section of the Scouting family after Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Explorer Scouts are young people aged between 14 and 18 years. There is flexibility in the age range, young people can join from age 13½ but cannot move on to Network until they are 18. Young people must have left the Explorer Scout section before the date of their 18th birthday.
Scout Network is the fifth and final section of the Scouting movement. From the time of Baden-Powell, there have been arrangements for young people who wanted to continue after their time in the Scout Section, and in 1967, Venture Scouts were formed from the existing Senior Scout and Rover Scout Sections. During the late 1990s we decided that, to meet the changing needs of young people, there should be two sections for the over-14s: Explorer Scouts for 14 to 18-year-olds, and the Scout Network for 18 to 25s.
